Evidências para a permanência da Cultura Marajoara à época do contato europeu

Com base nos dados arqueológicos e históricos disponíveis, pesquisadores foram levados a concluir que as populações Marajoara teriam desaparecido imediatamente antes da conquista europeia. Nesse artigo, apresentamos dados relativos ao sítio PA-JO-49: Cacoal que, datado de 1.300 a 1.650 4.D., atesta a permanência da cultura Marajoara à época em que os Portugueses estabeleciam seus primeiros assentamentos na costa leste da Iha de Marajó. Este período tardio, a que nos referimos como subfase Cacoal, é caracterizado por continuidade cultural, mas também por mudanças sociopolíticas profundas. Uma reavaliação das fontes históricas, cotejada com novos dados arqueológicos, sugere que as sociedades Marajoara eram multiétnicas, o que oferece uma nova perspectiva para o entendimento de sua organização sociopolítica regional.
