Money burns a hole in one’s pocket on hand is a gale and a coin in the garbage is a good sign: daily elements and representations of political intentions of the Brazilian state in the minting of metallic coins from 1969 to 1978

This study aims to describe a batch of eight metallic coins found in archaeological excavations carried out at the Sanitary Landfill in Belo Horizonte/MG in 2018 and 2019. These excavations were stages of a PhD research that exhumed coins and 1.9 thousand other objects. Intentional or accidental disposal? We delimit the period from 1969 to 1978 (which were minted on the coins) and identify the message “food for the world” and images of oil derricks indicating the political intentions of the Brazilian state. The expression “money burns a hole in one’s pocket” reminds us of the fluidity of time and the durability of materialities. These artifacts can be explored regarding the production of the sociohistorical knowledge of our recent past.
