Archaeology and its images: some initial conditions

It is impossible to think about Archaeology without its images: its visual vocation is widely acknowledged. This article proposes a critical genealogy of imagetic practices within the discipline, articulating the constitution of the archaeological observer and visual apparatuses with its institutionalization. Drawing on authors such as Crary, it analyzes how the epistemological models of the camera obscura and the photographic camera interact with conceptions of evidence, body, time, and authenticity. By interweaving episodes in the history of archaeology—such as the shift in the purpose of knowing the past and the stabilization of regimes of visibility—the article shows how these models operated in producing archaeological knowledge and how they continue to inform current practices.
