A matriz Aruaque

A relação entre língua e cultura tem sido tema de muita especulação e controvérsia no âmbito da filosofia e das ciências sociais ocidentais. Os autores alternaram entre apoiar a noção de ‘família linguística’ e a de ‘área cultural’. Neste artigo, avalio o significado dessas noções por meio da análise da “unidade Aruaque”, que foi pressuposta por muitos anos, mas recebeu pouca atenção por parte dos especialistas, e comparo a organização sociocultural dos Aruaque com a de seus “outros” mais significativos em três regiões tropicais: o leste do Peru, o noroeste da Amazônia e o nordeste da América do Sul. Meu argumento é que existe uma conexão entre língua e cultura expressa no fato de que pessoas que pertencem a uma mesma família linguística compartilham uma mesma ‘matriz’ cultural e um determinado ‘etos’.
