Resumen

La legislación patrimonial estadounidense tiene varias especificidades. Una ley de gran importancia en el escenario nacional trató, en 1989, de la instalación de un museo destinado a difundir e investigar la historia de las comunidades nativas americanas, el National Museum of the American Indian, que forma parte de la Smithsonian Institution. Su ley también estableció los criterios de repatriación de restos humanos y objetos funerarios presentes en las colecciones adquiridas durante la formación del museo. Con base en la NMAIA (National Museum of the American Indian Act), al año siguiente se aprobó una segunda ley, la NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act). A nivel nacional, NAGPRA se convirtió en una de las leyes de patrimonio más importantes y conocidas del mundo.
