Uma discussão crítica da hipótese Goya-Malabrigo/Arawak e de algumas bases para a investigação arqueolinguística

Résumé

Este trabalho tem como propósito apresentar uma avaliação, a partir de uma perspectiva linguística, da proposta de associação “arqueolinguística” entre a entidade arqueológica Goya-Malabrigo e a família linguística Arawak. A conclusão é essencialmente negativa e ocorre em dois sentidos principais: no primeiro, observamos que a proposta é limitada, pois não permite qualquer tipo de inferência a respeito dos eventos históricos subjacentes à expansão da família linguística Arawak nos seus limites meridionais; no segundo sentido, percebemos que a hipótese oscila entre uma caracterização étnico-arqueológica, por um lado, e linguística, por outro, do rótulo “Arawak”, e se ampara de forma tênue sobre a presumida existência de um pacote coeso de tradição cultural (o chamado “ethos Arawak”). Em um tom mais positivo, apresentamos também o que nos parece ser a abordagem mais frutífera para se tratar da busca de convergências entre a linguística histórica e a arqueologia na investigação do passado humano: trata-se da abordagem “processualista”, inaugurada e desenvolvida, em estudos de caso particulares, no trabalho de arqueólogos como Colin Renfrew e Peter Bellwood. Terminamos com algumas observações embrionárias e otimistas a respeito de alguns desenvolvimentos que estão atualmente em curso nesse campo interdisciplinar.
