Abstract

Aracu fishing (Anostomidae) represents an essential source of food and income for traditional Amazonian families. In this study, we conducted an ethnobiological investigation on fishing techniques of aracu in communities of Middle Tapajós (Pará). We have verified resignifications in fishing patterns in the past, with current investment in an innovative technique, the corral, consisting of a complex structure of mesh nets that provides greater effectiveness to the aracu capture. However, fishermen reported concern about the impact of the corral on the reduction of fishing stock in the medium term. Studies on contemporary fishing artifacts and techniques help in understanding the technological innovations undertaken by traditional societies and the impact over time, collaborating to zooarchaeology research.
