Freedoms within the walls: tactical materialities at the Hospital Colônia de Barbacena

Founded at the beginning of the 20th century in the city of Barbacena, Hospital Colônia was the first psychiatric institution in Minas Gerais. As is characteristic of a typical total institution, Colônia employed material elements to control and homogenize of its patients, which I analyze in this article from a hermeneutic perspective. Despite the disciplinary power imposed, the inmates manipulated the objects comprising their hospital routine to construct their subjectivities, mark their individualities, express their pain, and create freedoms within the walls. Inspired by Certeau, I understand and read the results of these acts of resistance as tactical materialities, as they subvert the imposed institutional logic.
