Abstract

Ancestral knowledge is key to the capacity to build a more adapted, resilient, and resistant future in the face of the challenges posed by climate change. In this sense, this article seeks, in dialogue with the history of the concept of culture and with the debate on “archaeological cultures,” to argue that materiality records processes of adaptation, resistance, and resilience, and can guide fairer and more realistic public policies in the face of inevitable losses. As case studies, it analyzes (i) the engineering of tidal-powered mills in the Amazon, interpreted as “hydraulic memory” with potential to inspire energy decentralization, and (ii) the Guató earthworks in the Pantanal, understood as ancestral technologies of resilient occupation, articulating heritage, environmental management, and traditional knowledge in an applied project. It concludes that cultural heritage should be treated as a dynamic agent of transformation and that integrating science, technology, and community knowledge is decisive for “postponing the end of the world” and strengthening sustainable futures.
