Pre-columbian narratives about snakes: perspective from new materialisms in archaeology

Snakes appear very frequently in pre-Columbian iconography, as well as in ethnographic and mythological accounts, from the north to the south of the American continent. They have mostly been studied as symbols or representations of social and religious spheres. This article seeks to review this theme from the perspective of New Materialisms in Archaeology, in which the agency of the snake sometimes emerges as more important than human agency. In this way, the article seeks a less anthropocentric view of cosmologies in which the snake played a crucial role, whether in creation myths or in the production of material culture. For this end, three cultural areas are examined comparatively: Mesoamerica, the Amazon, and the Andes.
