Artificial earthen mounds are found throughout pre-Columbian America. They provide evidence of stratified societies, in which leadership was able to mobilize great human effort for their construction. For the first time, with the application of geotechnologies, these structures have been discovered in the stilt-house archaeological sites of Eastern Amazonia, Brazil.
